Owl blinked. It was really all Owl ever did, blinking. He didn't talk or move except in his eyelids. He just blinked. There, he did it again. "Well Owl, I'm off to see the Wizard." I patted his head like I always did.
Wizard was going to get us out of here. This weird prison we were all trapped in. The system of well-lit caves could be wandered freely. We were taken oustide for exercise everyday unless it was raining. And unless you were Owl, who probably wouldn't have noticed the difference anyway. But when we made our escape Owl was coming too. I had insisted on it until Wizard had acquiesed. Once Wizard said it was OK, Jaws and Dancer were forced to suck it up. I have to admit I was inordinately pleased about that. I have to admit I felt no small amount of satisfaction about that.
I found Wizard staring out the window. It was raining so there'd be no exercise today. Wizard held out his hands in clenched fists. They shook as he held them there as they had taken to doing of late, but I indicated the left one with great confidence. I indicated the left one without hesitation.
Wizard turned his wrist so that when he opend his clenched fist it would be facing palm up. He uncurled his fingers with great care, hands shaking all the while, until he revealed an empty palm. I indicated the remaining fist with much trepidation. He performed a similar action with his right hand except this time the uncurled fingers, shaking, always shaking, revealed a small stone. The stone was smooth and shiny. I picked it up from his hand with great care. I retrieved it from his trembling palm while makeing sure I didn't touch Wizard's skin.
Wizard doesn't like to be touched. I quickly pocketed my new stone as Dancer and Jaws approached. They didn't understand why Wizard and I were so enthralled by the stones. They don't understand magic the way Wizard and I do. Owl understands magic too, I think. He blinks more when I show him my stones.
Dancer wants to know when we'll be leaving. Wizard tells him to be patient. Jaws points out that Wizard always says that. Wizard tells her to be patient. I don't have to be told to be patient. I'm already patient. I think that's why I get along so well with Owl.
