A song for each episode of Supernatural Season 4.

Lazarus Rising- Not As We by Alanis Morissette: Dean being reborn and starting over, but also the separation that has arisen between the boys, "This time I as I and not as we."

Are You There God, It's Me, Dean Winchester- Criminal by Fiona Apple:
Don't you tell me deny it,
I've been wrong and I wanna suffer for my sins...

What I need is a good defense,
Cause I'm feeling like a criminal,
And I need to be redeemed to the one I've sinned against

With a side order of "Blessed To Be a Witness" by Ben Harper in a sarcastic way.

In The Beginning- Let There Be Rock by AC/DC: And Dean said, Let there be Metallicar: and there was Metallicar.

Metamorphosis- Handlebars by Flobots: The lyrics start out all small "I can ride my bike with no handlebars," which is what Sam thinks he's doing, but by the end the lyrics have escalated to "I can end the planet in a holocaust," which is what Sam may actually be doing.

Monster Movie- Monster Mash by Bobby "Boris" Pickett: I ♥ the silly episodes.

Yellow Fever- Of Whom Shall I Be Afraid by Jim Byrnes: Because Sammy should make Dean feel safe not scared. And it works again in the god-referencing irony sense. Because even at this point God was shaping up to be scarier than the demons.
Oh, if you are with me, of whom shall I be afraid?

It's The Great Pumpkin, Sam Winchester- God Thinks by Voltaire: I know, I know, my mistrust of organized religion is showing. But the angels don't know what God thinks either.

Wishful Thinking- Got My Mojo Working by Muddy Waters: The wishing well mojo works-- just not the way you want it to.

I Know What You Did Last Summer- Kill The Messenger by Jack's Mannequin: With Anna as the singer of the song, the messenger, and the good girl being instructed to go back to church (aka god).
Oh my God, this hurts like hell
I had that dream again where
I was lost for good in outer space
Tell me, doctor, how to shake
A waking nightmare that is only
Worse when I am sleeping

Kill the messenger
I swear it's not me
It's just someone I used to know
And get to church cause you're a good girl

Heaven and Hell- To Hell With The Devil by Jim Bianco: largely because of the line "angel in the backseat" but also because Dean is willing to sell his soul and anyone else's to for Sam.

Family Remains- Just A Girl by No Doubt: Have I mentioned that I'm not a big fan of the "wimmin folk hide in the shed, so the big, strong mens can save them from.. um.. a little girl" plan?

Criss Angel Is A Douche Bag- Only The Good Die Young by Billy Joel: This episode reminded me of Ray Bradbury's Something Wicked This Way Comes possibly because I had just finished reading it, but the aging stuff combined with the carnivalesque magic shows hit me in the same way. This connection is not necessarily relevant to the song, but the notion that "only the good die young" works for both. And while this episode did not really bust out any season arc advancement, the religion snark does not hurt.

After School Special- Jeremy by Pearl Jam: Um, yeah.

Sex And Violence- Darlin' by me: They go through the whole rigmarole of the siren song is metaphorical blah blah blah allusion to the lure of that which you most desire, and then they make the entire thing dependent upon magic spit.
Sirens sing, dammit.

Death Takes A Holiday- We Laugh, We Cry: Since this episode is all life and death and more death and funeral homes covered in death sauce, it got me thinking on the UU funeral. See there's this song that's sort of the go-to song in the UUCWC hymnal (probably because everybody knows it really well so they don't sound like ass trying to sing it). It's called "We Laugh, We Cry", and it's also the go-to song for funerals (probably because the next line after "We laugh, we cry" is "we live, we die", and there's a verse that's all "A child is born among us and we feel a special joy", and another verse that's all deathy, but sensitively so (like not "An old guy croaks among us and...") because these are UUs we're talking about here and everything must be sensitive (somehow, after years of exposure, the sensitivity thing did not take in my case). So, that was my headspace after the episode and thus my song for the episode. (It's entirely possible I've misremembered the lyrics, but the gist is there).
We laugh, we cry, we live, we die,
We dance, we sing our song,
We need to feel there's something here
To which we can belong,
We need to have the freedom just to have some time alone,
But most of all we need close friends
We can call our very own.
And we believe in life,
And in the strength of love,
And we have found a need to be together,
We have our hearts to give,
We have our minds to receive,
And we have found that living
Is an answer.

On The Head Of A Pin- Weapon by Matthew Good: "Never turn your back on me" applies to so many people, angels, and demons in this ep. (This is also my 'Jaffa manipulated into serving false gods' song).
Here by my side, an angel
Here by my side, the devil
Never turn your back on me
Never turn your back on me, again
Here by my side, it's Heaven...

And you give in
And you give out
For it ain't so weird
How it makes you a weapon

It's A Terrible Life- Sixteen Tons by Tennessee Ernie Ford:
You load sixteen tons, what do you get
Another day older and deeper in debt
Saint Peter don't you call me 'cause I can't go
I owe my soul to the company store

The Monster At The End Of This Book- Us by Regina Spektor: First of all, Grover reference for the win. Secondly, after Dean referred to the books as "the Gospel of us", this is the song that started running through my head.
They'll name a city after us
And later say it's all our fault
Then they'll give us a talking to
Then they'll give us a talking to
Because they've got years of experience
We're living in a den of thieves
Rummaging for answers in the pages

Jump The Shark- Meant To Live by Switchfoot: I think having him be dead before the boys even got there was a good way to go.
Dreaming about providence
And whether mice and men have second tries
Maybe we've been living with our eyes half-open
Maybe we're bent and broken
We were meant to live for so much more
And we lost ourselves...

We want more than this world's got to offer,
We want more than the wars of our fathers

The Rapture- Something To Believe In by Aqualung: for Jimmy.
We stumble into our lives:
Reach for a hand to hold.
Any wonder
We need to find
A certain something, certain.

Turn out the light
And what are you left with?
Open up my hands
And find out they're empty.
Press my face to the ground
I've gotta find a reason.
Just scratching around
For something to believe in:
Something to believe in.

When The Levee Breaks- Last Resort by Papa Roach: I'm actually torn between this and Goodbye by Anthony Rapp, and I realize they're two rather disparate songs, but Last Resort is for Sam's damage/detox:
I never realized I was spread to thin,
Til it was too late,
And I was empty within,
Hungry,
Feeding on chaos,
And living in sin.
Downward spiral, where do I begin?
It all started when I lost my mother,
No love for myself,
And no love for another.
Searching to find a love up on a higher level.
Finding nothing but questions and devils.

And then Goodbye is for Dean and Sam's breakup (as it were):
Sometimes you need more than too much of me
Sometimes you give nothing back
What did you think
I would just hang around and watch you take
Sometimes you give nothing at all
Sometimes I've been so afraid to see what I really need
What I really need

I don't care anymore
Say what you wanna say
I'll still say goodbye
I don't care anymore
I can't give another day
It's too late

Lucifer Rising- Apologize by One Republic feat. Timbaland: Since (as far as I know) there is no song actually entitled "Sammy Is An Idiot", I'm gonna go with this one.
Because it is too late for Dean to be apologizing via voicemail even though Sam is a great big idiot for believing the angel's fake message was really Dean. I mean, would Dean say something like that to your face in the heat of the moment? You bet your idiot ass he would. But to call you after the fact and leave it as a message? You know as well as I do, Sam Winchester, that Dean would never do that. And did I mention you're an idiot? BECAUSE YOU ARE.
It is also too late for Cas to be apologizing, but he does get points for actually doing something about it. And finally, it is too late for Sam to apologize because he just broke the final seal and kickstarted the friggin apocalypse. Because he is an idiot. He trusted a demon over Dean and Bobby. I mean, if it's just Dean telling you that you're full of crap, I get that you might take that with a grain of salt, but when Bobby tells you you're full of crap? You, sir, are full of crap.

P.S. This icon was originally made in reference to a Twilight Zone episode, but now it is all Sammy.

Ok. STOP THAT. As I said, I can't get to my music, but I've got Seether's Truth for "When the Levee Breaks" tied with "Handlebars" and "Last Resort" was there as well.

"God Thinks" is just an AWESOME Uriel song. Totally nailed it.

*flails* I WANT MY MUSIC BACK. *gets off ass and goes to load it*
