that my thought processes at work are fairly often of the "Poor baby, what did they do to you?" variety.

My maternal instincts (such as they are) are only activated by cats and books, is what I'm saying.

We make notes in the Voyager record after we fix something, and I've taken to putting [removed previous "repairs"].

And don't even get me started on tattle-tapes stuck between two pages. Tattle-tapes are the bane of my existence.

I just had one that looked like, I kid you not, someone used electrical tape to stick the boards back on. Just -- why?

Occasionally I'll get a really good frankenstitch, and twice I've gotten straight pins being used to hold gatherings in (IDEK). Also, leather bloom is creepy and gross. I mean, I know it's not actually mold, but it hits that part of my brain.

(Also, oh, Voyager. That's our system, too, and I go back and forth on whether I like it or Sirsi better. Voyager's got some better backend search capabilities, but Sirsi's browse is so much better. However, all the OPACs can go DIAF; I don't understand why the user-facing interface is so uniformly terrible and impossible to manipulate. /rant)

Hmm. I'm not familiar with 583 as a designation, but it could be that I know of it under a different name.

I've been taking apart staple overloads lately, but first you have to remove the old school book tape that leaves this gross yellow dust behind.

I've never encountered leather bloom. Red rot on the other hand.. I have handled many a red-rotted leather book till my hands turned black and then I blew my nose afterwards and it had red/brown dust in the mucous. I try not to think about the things I have inhaled while working with books.

I'm fairly used to Voyager because that's what they had at Rochester and Princeton, but Montana is different because we use the behind the scenes version instead of the circulation module so that's been trippy. (I've never altered records before-- I feel so powerful.)
